How to Win Your Tax Audit
June, 22 2022 by Charla Suaste
One of the most frequently asked questions regarding tax audits is, “How do I win my tax audit?”
It’s a fair question but, as with most things tax-related, there is no straightforward answer. And unfortunately, there is really no such thing as “winning” or “losing” a tax audit (although, it may certainly feel that way, depending on whether you get a refund – or end up owing the IRS more tax money than planned).
"Winning a tax audit,” simply means that you’ve paid the IRS no more than you rightfully owe.
So, if you’ve received an audit letter, how do you know if you’ve already paid the IRS what you rightfully owe? Unless you’re an expert in tax code and the audit process, this may not be an easy question to answer! Fortunately for you, this is where the professionals at TaxAudit come in.
About TaxAudit
If you are unfamiliar with our company – we’re happy you’re here, and we’re ready to help! We’re one of the oldest and largest audit defense firms in the nation, and we handle thousands of audits for taxpayers all over the country every single year. Our team of tax professionals are truly the best in the business when it comes to navigating the audit process – and they can help provide peace of mind amongst the stress and confusion of receiving an audit notice.
So how can we help you?
Upon receiving any audit notice, we review both the letter and your tax return.
If you are a member with us, one of the first things we do when you report an audit notice to us is request a copy of both the notice and the tax return for our review. This will give us an idea of what the IRS is claiming, what documentation may be needed as substantiation, and what the timeline for a response is.
We can confirm what additional documentation will be needed.
Depending on the information listed on the notice and the tax return, we may request additional information to verify what was claimed. After receipt of this documentation, we can typically tell you whether the audit notice you’ve received is correct or not. Instead of sitting on hold with the IRS or pouring over the tax code yourself, you can let us do the work for you.
If the notice is incorrect, we defend your tax return to the IRS for the duration of the audit process.
We do this by:
- Defending both state and federal income tax returns, including tax returns filed late
- Explaining your options and developing a strategy
- Reviewing your documentation before presenting it to any taxing authority
- Scheduling and attending all audit appointments on your behalf
- Defending your tax return through the entire audit process
So, if you ever receive an audit notice, don’t take it on as a solo sport and try to “win” on your own! When you become a member of TaxAudit, you have the support of an entire team behind you – so you never have to face the IRS alone.
