The TaxAudit Story

Our commitment to making a difference in the lives of others is at the heart of everything we do – from protecting and defending our members, to supporting the total well-being of our employees, to serving our local communities.

Our Founding

TaxResources, Inc. was founded in 1988 when it saved 79 unresolved California audit cases from a bankrupt audit defense firm. Our company’s first tax professional set out on a road trip across California, determined to protect and defend the 79 individuals. In five weeks, all 79 cases were closed – but our story was just beginning.

Early Growth

Over the next ten years, the number of audit cases continued to increase. In turn, we opened our first headquarters office in Citrus Heights, CA, a call center was established, and additional tax professionals were brought on to help.

Partnership with TurboTax®

In 1998, TaxResources and Intuit® developed an agreement to include Audit Defense as an “add-on” service in the TurboTax® software – a partnership that still exists today. 

This was the beginning of our membership-based audit defense product, where taxpayers could purchase audit defense prior to receiving a notice, and we would provide full-scale audit representation at no additional cost.

Establishing a Brand

In 2000, TaxResources established its first brand identity. A maze-like icon represented the complexity of a tax audit and the confusion it can create.

Expansion

In 2002, TaxResources opened a software development office in Ventura County, CA. The team members in this office would develop and implement software technology to help our tax professionals effectively and securely manage audit cases.

In 2004, to help with the ever-increasing workload, TaxResources opened another tax professional office in Orange County, CA, where we would continue to hire enrolled agents and CPAs.

By 2008, TaxResources had reached one million members.

Education

To continually provide the best service possible to our members, TaxResources launched an internal tax education department in 2006. Now known as Learning & Development, this team offers in-house, IRS-approved classes to ensure our tax professionals are up to date on the latest tax legislation. This team also provides in-depth research and analysis services when our tax pros are working on cases that involve complex tax issues. Additionally, they answer real-time, tax-related questions on our blog to make complicated tax issues easier for taxpayers to understand.

Employee Ownership

In 2011, our leadership decided to make our company an employee-owned organization. An ESOP is a retirement plan through which employees benefit from company stock value growth and is based on the belief that everyone has the power to make a difference in the future of our company. So when one of us succeeds, all of us succeed!

Message Access Portal

Always looking for ways to improve our member’s experience, our technology division launched our online Message Access Portal (MAP) in 2012. MAP provides an easy and secure way to communicate with our members as well as send and receive required documents.

Fresh New Look

By 2013, TaxResources had more than 3 million members and rebranded itself to TaxAudit.com with a fresh new look. In 2017, TaxAudit dropped the "dot com" from its name. Having outgrown its office space in Citrus Heights, the company moved its headquarters to Folsom, CA.

TaxAudit Mobile App

In 2019, we launched the TaxAudit Mobile App to enable our members to submit documents easily and securely from their smartphones. This implementation allows our members to securely communicate with their tax professional, even while on the go.

10 Million Members!

TaxAudit membership reached 10 million in 2018 as team members celebrated 30 years of making a difference.

Tax Debt Relief

With the goal of providing additional support to taxpayers facing tax debt, we launched our new Tax Debt Relief service in the spring of 2020.
